How did I get into video production?
I started filming videos as an untrained amateur. In 2008 I “borrowed” my brother’s FlipCam and just started shooting. I’ve included some of my first videos here on the page I’ve titled Walk Before You Run.
In 2011 I had an internship at a local creative agency where I got my baptism by fire in multimedia production. From low-budget films to PSA radio ads and TV commercials, I gained exposure and, without formal training, really started getting into the video medium.
In 2012 I produced and edited Choke Point India for Circle of Blue. I didn’t take the trip with the journalists, I didn’t shoot the interview footage, I didn’t take the field photos, I didn’t give the subjects any direction. The journalists hadn’t even written their stories that the video would promo – I had to discern from the hours of footage what the story would be, to find the clips that tell that story, and then make a teaser.
My videography career is a story of constant learning and evolution. Even in the Watermarks collection filmed in 2016-2017, you can see that my best videos at the top of the page are so different than the first ones I made at the bottom of the page. There are more Watermarks that I filmed, but the partners at Lake Ontario Waterkeeper edited, you can peep them here.
I’m glad I started making films, and I’ve learned so much along the way. I’m not sure becoming a filmmaker is what I see myself doing after I get my Master of Science from the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability in May of 2019, but I know I’ll keep making videos, so watch this space!
